Fireflies

I went out running yesterday evening, which is not unusual (literally everybody and their dog does), but after a few minutes I started to worry about myself, thinking the heat must be getting to me since I was seeing flashes of light. And then I realized, THE FIREFLIES HAVE COME!!!!!! Fireflies were at least 60% of the reason I moved here so I knew I would have to blog about them right away. The whole genetics of fireflies fascinate and confuse me, but none of that matters because they're gorgeous.

And at the time I saw those fireflies, I swear I planned this to be an entirely happy post.

Coming home from my firefly high, I almost stepped on something that looked a bit like a small sparrow, but was scuttling around the ground like a lizard. I decided that I didn't really want to know what it was, but as I stepped into the streetlight, it followed me. If you've ever lived in the South, you've already guessed that it was a cockroach. I've lived in Hawaii, I'm no stranger to bugs. But apparently I am a stranger to stranger bugs. Ew. Ew. HUGE.

In all honesty though, there could be twice as many cockroaches, and the fireflies would still make up for all of them. :)

  1. Yay! I'm glad you get to enjoy the lightening bugs. I LOVE them! It is one of the things I miss a lot.

Do the cockroaches in North Carolina fly? I can't remember. They do in central GA. Yuck! Don't miss that!

  2. I have always loved fireflies/lightning bugs! They are SOOOOO cool!
Heard you guys in Charlotte were in the severe weather/tornado area today.
Stay calm and if things get really close, put Nigel in his box and you and him get in the bathtub with your mattress over you!
Of course if the weather is really severe you either won't have power or you'll be elsewhere so my advice will go un-noticed until after the emergency.
    Love you!

  3. Um, did you forget about the B-52 roaches in Hawaii? I was talking to a friend once when one of those suckers literally beaned him in the head.

Also, re: fireflies and running? Read this and try not to wet yourself:

  4. Ugh! I hate all bugs. They are no good. Run away Lisa, run away! But, maybe scream while you are running so that people stop to look at you and wonder, "Why is that girl running from the fireflies?"
